Severe weather and the growing impact of climate change
Recent severe weather across Canada reinforces how important it to prepare for the impacts of storms.
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the intense flash flooding that occurred in Toronto and other parts of southern Ontario between July 15-16, 2024, is estimated to have caused over $940 million in insured damage. That storm dropped a month’s worth of rain (100mm) on Toronto in the span of a few hours.
Loss prevention measures for homeowners
However, there may be discounts for loss prevention measures that can protect your home and potentially reduce your insurance premiums.
Loss prevention measures can offer peace of mind and unlock potential savings:
- Many insurers offer discounts for certain protection measures and also helping homeowners pay for improved mitigation devices in the event of a claim. It's important to find out if there are discounts available to you.
- Backup power systems
- Temperature monitoring systems
- Automatic water shut off valves
- Sump pumps
- Water leak detection systems
Make sure your insurer is aware of any investments you have made in your home that are likely to reduce the severity or probability of certain types of losses. Insurers may change discounts or create new discounts for homeowners in response to climate change, and claims trends.
